There are dozens of websites and books out there for learning to climb. UK Climbing is probably the best and they run regular series’ of articles aimed at all levels of ability with some excellent videos. If you need advice or want to ask more questions then you can register and use the forum here. Most of the active Shetland climbers are self-taught and enjoy helping out others who are wanting to learn the ropes.

Club membership is due annually and is around £30 per year for full membership. It is decided each year at the AGM and the exact fee is on the membership form available on the Club Info page or by contacting us.

Normally to come on outdoor club trips you will need to be 18 or over, or accompanied by a parent/guardian. The minimum age for any trips is 10.

Yes and no! Every year we organise a range of club trips usually defined by who’s interested. Non-members who are competent are always welcome on trips, but we prefer you to join because of liability insurance. You’ll also get financial help towards the cost off-Shetland trips from the club so it usually makes sense to join!

Novices may not be able to join all trips, although we will try our best to make it possible for you. A good example is the annual Winter Trip, where a reasonable level of hill-walking competence is essential and we generally won’t take anyone under 18 unless with a parent.

Yes you can! We welcome new climbers and try to put on some trips or evenings where we teach basics. Even if you don’t join the club straight away, register on the website and introduce yourself on the forum. Most members are more than happy to take novices out in an evening or weekend for a climb, and we can usually lend you gear to start with.

We’ll only run a novice day/evening outside if there are novices who we know want to come, so please don’t wait for us to announce one!

You can also start out at the indoor wall. Come along to a club night for a chat, and we can get you on an induction course.

If you book the wall privately, you pay per person per hour, or you can book the whole wall per hour. This is payable to the Clickimin. Please contact them for rates (approx £4/hr)

On club nights, we book the wall and you pay us, not reception. For a 2 hour session it is current £4 for members and £6 for non-members.

You can book the indoor wall privately by contacting the Clickimin (01595741000). To hire the wall there needs to be at least 2 of you. You can either hire it per person for a shared booking, or for a higher fee you can hire out the whole wall.

Alternatively you can come to a club night (currently Mondays 7.30 – 9.30pm). Anyone is welcome to come along and we even run taster sessions on the first Monday of the month for folk to come and try it out before signing up to an induction course.

Anyone over the age of 10 can climb at the Clickimin, but you must undergo an induction which takes 4 weeks to complete. At the moment the Clickimin arrange the inductions for new climbers. If you are competent (can tie-in, belay and climb safely) then you can come along to a club night and we can sign you off, meaning you can skip the full induction.

The induction is not as laborious as it sounds and for new climbers it is a fun and challenging way of starting out climbing in a comfortable environment. The 4 sessions are 1.5hrs each and usually run over 4 consecutive weeks.
