Great progress on the new climbing wall finally! We’ve been waiting a long time for this and today received photos of probably the final design.

In summary, the wall is 7.5m high (pretty much the same as the highest point at the Clickimin), will have 8 climbing lines (Clickimin was 5) and will also have a 3m high bouldering/traverse wall and steeply overhanging training wall (moonboard).

The design is a big step up from the old wall with far more interest and a 1.5m overhang in the centre as well as a slab, corner and a few straight vertical lines.

It will be housed at Aith leisure centre in the old squash court, but we’re still yet to discuss things like opening times, access, prices etc. Best guess is that the wall will be built early 2018.

Hi Rob. It’s slightly delayed – starting build early Feb. Hopefully open by the end of Feb. A few changes to the bouldering wall design too due to structural issues.

Once open there will be a series of taster sessions and club sessions as a launch and to get as many people onto the wall as possible, followed by plenty of induction sessions for beginners. I’ll post up dates for these as soon as we have them.

New wall progressing nicely. New ropes, harnesses etc. have now arrived, and matting is expected next week.
The bulk of the gear is fairly standard DMM wall stuff, including their heavy duty climbing wall shoes.
Matting on the roped routes is standard 50mm, and matting for the moonboard and traverse area is 300mm matting + carpet topping for improved landing stability.
A come and try schedule has been worked out, as has induction and public sessions, all this of course dependant on all the equipment being installed, and a general risk assesment/insurance sign off.

Wall is looking great and the different angles are allowing for some really interesting routesetting.

New ropes in place, and the new DMM helmets are very comfy! Looking good.

New matting arrived and installed – 300mm crash mat for traverse and moon board, and normal 50mm stuff for roped climbing area. The fold up mats from the previous Clickimin wall will be re-used for the rest of the roped wall.

The photos look great, any idea as to when it’ll be open to the public? Is there any other wall in Shetland?

This is the only indoor wall in Shetland. At the moment SRT (Shetland Recreational Trust) is running a series of taster sessions aimed at people who have never climbed before. The sessions run Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, and booking is essential.

We hope that SRT will be able to open it for public sessions, soon, hopefully within the next few weeks. I’ve a meeting with West mainland Leisure Centre tomorrow to discuss scheduled public sessions.
I’ll drop you an email about club membership details too.

The wall is booked for club members and guests on Friday from 18.30 to 20.30. First session!
There is an SRT registration form we need to fill out before using the wall, and we can bring club membership forms.
