So we’re just back from a brilliant trip away, for me it was probably the best trip we’ve had. Here’s a brief roundup and a taste of what we got up to.

Unfortunately it didn’t start too well. The ferry was delayed, then Stu managed to wipe out 2 tyres with a pothole so only arrived at 2am! Car issues plagued Bina too who didn’t get there until Monday, and a few folk didn’t make it at all, which was a real shame. Still, once we were all together we numbered 14 in total, the biggest group we’ve had at The Logs, our regular chalet in Torlundy, Fort William – a great base as ever.

Although there had been masses of snow in the east, not much had made it over to the west, but we weren’t complaining. Temperatures were in the minuses and there was still plenty of snow lying down to around 200m, and most importantly, a stable snowpack. As the week went on the temperature rose slightly and there was some snow and light rain, but conditions were excellent all week for climbing, skiing and walking, although the cloud rarely lifted above the tops, so no one bothered with summits or ridges.

Between us we managed winter climbing, piste skiing, valley walks, snowy scrambles, snow-shoeing, ski touring, cycling, indoor climbing, drinking tea and trivial pursuit. Whisky drinking featured less than previous years mainly due to everyone being knackered in the evenings!!

Some of the routes/days were:

  • North Castle Gully, Ben Nevis (II)
  • 1934 Route, Ben Nevis (II/III)
  • Ledge Route, Ben Nevis (II)
  • Glen Nevis / Meall Cumhann walk
  • Nevis Range Skiing
  • Lost Valley, Glen Coe
  • Glen Dessary, Loch Arkaig walk
  • Glenfinnan Viaduct Trail / Malaig day trip
  • Chno Dearg snow-shoe / ski tour
  • Kinlochleven pipeline walk
  • Garbh Bheinn walk/scramble
  • Cycling at Nevis Range forest trails

Thanks to everyone who came and I’m already looking forward to next year. For anyone interested in coming on future trips the winter trip is open to all members and this year’s cost worked out at about £180 per person including ferry (not cabin), accommodation, transport and meals.
